Theme 2019: Making urban space more liveable using digital technology

In 2015, world leaders gathered at the UN to adopt 17 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve several extraordinary things by 2030: end poverty, promote prosperity and wellbeing for all, and protect the planet. In recent decades, the world has experienced unprecedented urban growth. In 2015, close to 4 billion people — 54 per cent of the world’s population — lived in cities and that number is projected to increase to about 5 billion people by 2030. Rapid urbanization has brought enormous challenges, that Prix BLOXHUB Interactive ’19 wishes to address.

Challenges include:

  • A lack of (non-commercial) activities in urban spaces
  • Noise in public space
  • Exclusion of groups of citizens
  • Unsafe spaces

We are facing a future, where it is expected that over 40% of all Internet-of-things sensors in the world will be installed in the facades and structures in our built environment. How can we make sure to employ these sensors right?
Whether the format of the submission is a prototype, visualization, or a video, we are looking for original responses and reflections within the two categories. They will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • How the idea is visionary, and how it can contribute to the theme “Making livable cities”
  • How digital technology supports the physical context in a sustainable way (both when looking at the choice of materials, production-chain and respect for the nature)
  • How digital technology is used to create broader perspectives on different local needs and demands (drawing from the linkages between activities and physics that we have not seen before)
  • How can we use technology (including digital infrastructure) to increase the knowledge about actual conditions in cities/public spaces and help adjust unforeseen urban stressors. In other words, the primarily focus of this competition is not about visualizing new aesthetic or functional ideas for our urban space. It is about showing new visions on how to look at sustainable processes in urban design, using digital technology.

Categories

EXCELLENCE: What can we learn?

The “Excellence” category addresses submission of a tested project (proof-of concept) or already realized projects, where technology either has been a part of the process or in the result. It recognizes excellence in work that can show us a better or new understanding about the usage, from looking at data patterns gathered from the installation/building/urban design. We encourage entries that can share valuable experience and tested/prototyped methods used to achieve more liveable cities.

Projects that will be submitted in this category will have the chance of winning prizemoney (€5000), but will also have the unique chance to be showcased at both BLOXHUB Interactive 2019 and at Ars Electronica 2019. Additionally, chosen projects will be offered to be showcased (and presented to delegations and clients visiting the building) at BLOXHUB for the rest of the year.

CONCEPT: 'The next idea'

The “Concept” category is dedicated specifically to tomorrow’s hybrid and trans disciplinary projects and approaches to the design of public space. Primary emphasis is on new exciting concepts transcending the boundaries between industry and research, architecture and behavioural patterns, physical shape and technology. In this category, originality counts just as much as masterful technical achievement. We encourage entries of concepts that will show visions on how an activation of a space can invite people from different ages, cultures and gender.

Projects that will be submitted in this category will have the chance of winning prizemoney (€5000), but will also have the unique chance to be showcased at both BLOXHUB Interactive 2019 and at Ars Electronica 2019. Additionally, chosen projects will be offered the unique chance to be matched with a relevant Danish company that can help boosting the realization of the project.

What should you enter?

Proposals can create a small-scale intervention, the design of an (indoor or outdoor) defined area, or the description of a digital infrastructure, but no matter the scale or specific use of technology, they must clearly represent the experience, activation and/or use of the space. It is also important to underline in what way the project is visionary and sustainable and in what way it’s a contribution to the liveable cities of tomorrow.

Topics:

  • Small-scale interventions
  • A new digital infrastructure (explaining the use of sensors in a defined area)
  • Behavioural change
  • Smart (living) facades
  • Interactive urban furniture
  • Interactive lighting
  • Technology-based process tools
  • VR/AR tools that can simulate a virtual context in a real context
  • Media architecture
  • Interactive architecture & design
  • New tools for urban planning
  • Intelligent environments
  • ...

Who can submit an entry?

It is a prerequisite that the projects have already been realized to the extent that they may be judged on the basis of documentation.
The work entered must have been created, realized or significantly updated within the last two years.
Participants may be individuals, groups, institutions, companies etc.

Checklist

The following materials are needed for the submission.

Excellence

  • Images/illustrations/visualizations of the work (JPG, TIF, BMP, PNG at maximum quality. Compressed file (like .zip .lzh file) is not acceptable).
  • Reflections on experiences gained in the projects, evaluations on how the project has been innovative in relation to and can contribute to the theme.
  • Detailed description of the concept, form of interaction and technical realization (Since a presentation of an outstanding interactive work naturally also depends on the technical requirements for on-site realization, please include information that is as specific as possible about technical (hardware/software) and spatial requirements, as well as what you could contribute to a presentation of your work)
  • Link to project (and quotes about it)
  • Video documentation / product video (approx. 2 min.) via upload
  • Optional: additional material (images/documents (PDF)/drawings (JPG, PDF))

Concept

  • Images/illustrations/visualizations of the work (JPG, TIF, BMP, PNG at maximum quality. Compressed file (like .zip .lzh file) is not acceptable).
  • Description of the concept, form of interaction and technology (and digital infrastructure) that could be used
  • Reflections on next step in relation to realization of the project (who would be potential collaborators? What would be the key value of the project, for whom?)
  • Optional: Video documentation (approx. 2 min.) via upload
  • Optional: additional material (images/documents (PDF)/drawings (JPG, PDF))

Categories and Prizes

The two BLOXHUB prize winners are prominently featured at BLOXHUB Interactive 2019 and at ARS Electronica 2019.
The prizewinners will also be featured digitally as a part of the Ars Electronica newsletter, in BLOXHUBs network consisting of 170 Danish well-established Danish companies, the network of Danish Architecture Centre and Danish Design Centre network and The Alexandra Institutes big network of international tech companies and academics.
Additionally, chosen projects in the category “Excellence” will be offered further showcasing in BLOXHUB for the rest of 2019 and submission in “Concept” will have the opportunity to get matched with a relevant Danish company.

Jury

The multidisciplinary expertise of the Jury members contributes to the quality of Prix BLOXHUB Interactive. The highly renowned experts come from both academic and entrepreneurial backgrounds and vouch for the quality and impartiality of the evaluation process.
